Girls Junior Varsity Soccer, Girls Varsity Soccer · Lady Dogs Beat the Heat & Tri-West

On Saturday the Lady Hot Dogs traveled to Tri-West in a coed doubleheader with the ladies kicking off the action. Even though it was an 11 o’clock start the temperature was already approaching 90 so the officials thankfully told both squads that a water break would happen in the middle of each half.

The Bruins came to play, it was their senior day. The game was fairly even for most of the first half with no team dominating possession and very few shots by either side, the Lady Dogs only managed 3 attempts in the first half to the Bruins 1. The Lady Dogs thought they had gotten on the board when Flor Lopez put a ball past the Bruin goalie after receiving a through ball from the midfield; however, it was waved off for offsides. Going into half-time the score was still 0-0.

The second half both teams were more aggressive in trying to attack the goal. However, neither team could manage to find the back of the net. The score at the time of the 2nd half’s water break was still 0-0. With the way things looked, it appeared that the Lady Dogs would be heading into another overtime game. However, that wouldn’t be the case when senior Alejandra Hernandez Cruz ripped a shot from just outside the 18-yard box past the Bruin goalie.

After Alejandra’s goal, the Hot Dogs thought they had another goal when another Alejandra shot rebounded off the crossbar straight to Yadira Lopez who put the rebound in. However, once again the goal was called off due to offsides. In the end, the 2 waved off goals didn’t matter as the Lady Dogs hung on for a 1-0 victory.

The win brought the Lady Hot Dogs’ record to 9-4-1 and 4-1 in the Sagamore Conference. This being the 9th win put this year’s squad in a tie with the 2007 squad for the most wins in a single season. This was also the defense’s 7th shutout of the season, even though they haven’t been tracked this is most likely a record for the girl’s program.
