The Lady Hot Dogs took on the Western Boone Stars on Monday night in one of the last few games before Sectional action begins next week. The Lady Dogs didn’t start off on the right foot with Webo getting on the board in the first 5 minutes of the game. It took some time but the Lady Dogs managed to get the goal back when Carolyne Morales crossed a ball to Flor Lopez who managed to find the back of the net. The 1-1 score lasted for awhile but there was a flurry of action in the last 13 minutes before half-time. The Stars managed to get 2 quick goals pushing the lead to 3-1 with about 10 minutes left in the first half. Freshmen Ari Regalado managed to get off a long shot that got by the Webo goalie to bring the half-time score 3-2 in favor of the Stars.
Coming out of half-time the Stars took advantage of the starting possession and managed to work it in for another quick goal to extend their lead to 4-2. However, the Lady Dogs showed a lot of heart and started to battle back when Liz Sandoval netted a goal on a long set piece to trim the Stars lead to 1. Once again the Stars found a way to net another goal to push the lead to 5-3 with a little over 20 minutes to play. This seemed to put the Lady Dogs into a different mindset as their play started to open up and this showed when Jessica Carapia served a great cross that Flor Lopez put into the back of the net to make the score 5-4 with about 15 minutes left in the game. Finally, Carolyne Morales broke free on a long ball played up by the defense and snuck it past the Webo goalie to even the score at 5 all with 11 minutes left in the game.
The score would hold until the end of regulation and once again since this was a Sagamore Conference game it went into overtime. During the overtime periods, both teams had a few opportunities but none of them resulted in a goal. This meant that for the 2nd time in 3 games the Lady Dogs would have a game settled by penalty kicks.
It was an exciting shootout; Webo had the first shot which was saved by Noemi Guijosa putting the Lady Dogs in position to control the shootout. Flor Lopez calmly stepped up and put the first Hot Dog PK past the Stars’ goalie. Both teams managed to score on their 2nd PK. On the 3rd Webo PK Noemi Guijosa made another save. The 3rd Hot Dog PK went low off the post for the first Hot Dog miss. Both teams once again managed to score on their 4th PK. The Hot Dogs had the advantage 3-2 with one shooter remaining and shooting second. On the Webo 5th PK Noemi Guijosa picked up her 3rd PK save during the shootout clinching the win for the Lady Dogs.
The win brought the Lady Dogs’ season record to 10-4-1 and 5-1 in conference action. The 10th win put this year’s squad in rare air; this is the first season that any Lady Hot Dog Soccer team has ever won 10 games in a season, which means that they currently have set the record for most wins in a season. It also gives extra meaning to their last home game of the season against Danville who currently sit at 6-0 in Sagamore Conference action. A Hot Dog win on Wednesday would have both teams end with identical 6-1 conference records.
After the Varsity game, the JV played a single half. They gave a goal fairly early but then also battled back to find a way to earn a 3-1 victory.
