On Thursday night the Lady Hot Dog Soccer team looked to get back to their winning ways over conference foe North Montgomery after the loss on Tuesday night against West Lafayette. The night looked promising with the Lady Dogs controlling the ball early on and taking several decent shots at the goal with the Charger goalie making some nice saves.
The Chargers got a little offense going during the middle of the half which resulted in a corner kick for them. On the corner the ball was served into the middle of the penalty area and the Chargers’ top player managed to get to the ball first and flick the ball over Hot Dog goalie Violeta Castro’s hands and just under the crossbar; to give the Chargers the 1-0 lead with 21 minutes left in the 1st half.
However, it didn’t take long for the Lady Dogs to respond. Shortly after the restart sophomore midfielder Ari Regalado found herself some space about 25 yards out and took a fantastic shot on goal. The shot evened the score at 1-1 about 35 seconds after the Chargers took the lead.
The Hot Dogs would manage to grab another goal late in the first half with junior forward Maria Alanis managed to dribble past the talented Charger sweeper to get off a shot that found the back of the net. Giving the Lady Hot Dogs a 2-1 lead with 10 minutes left to play in the first half.
During the second half, not much scoring happened with both goalies making some quality saves to keep the score at 2-1. With 5 minutes to go the Chargers got the benefit of a foul call close the Hot Dog penalty area and capitalized on the free kick by sneaking the ball around the front post to tie the game 2-2. The Hot Dogs had 2 quality chances to take the late lead but the Charger goalie made the saves on both.
With it being a conference game, it went to a 14 minute overtime split into 7-minute halves. Neither team could take advantage of their limited opportunities. So the game ended up going into penalty kicks to determine the winner. Both teams traded goals on the first 2 kicks for each team with Hot Dog goalie Marisol Cervantes just missing stopping the first Charger shot. The Chargers took a 3-2 advantage when the Charger goalie made a great save on Janet Martinez’s attempt. It came down to the last shot for the Chargers to clinch a victory with a made goal, however, her shot sailed over the crossbar giving the Hot Dogs the chance to equalize and extend the shootout. Liz Sandoval calmly came up and sank her shot to force a sudden death scenario. The 6th Charger shooter made her shot, with again Marisol coming up just short on the save. While on the Hot Dog’s 6th kick the Charger goalie made the save. The Chargers won the game with a final score of 3-2 after winning the PK shootout 5-4 in 6 kickers.
